Methley dominates Silverstone's Airy Acres

After the rustic splendours of Cadwell Park a total of thirty seven Classic Racing Cars found themselves at Silverstone’s airy acres, of these eighteen were one litre F3s. Qualifying took place in cloudy but dry conditions and as is becoming expected, Ian Gray was quickest overall closely followed by Antony Ross. Fastest F3 was David Methley followed by German visitor Roland Fischer in his Tecno, Methley’s Cadwell sparring partner Nigel Bancroft was next up ahead of Francois Derossi, the Frenchman heading Stuart Tizzard, Tim Kary and Keith Messer. Kary had solved his Cadwell overheating problems and was going well in only his second outing in the Brabham BT28; as usual Chris Holland and Leif Bosson were closely matched, although Chris felt that he was down on power. Andrew Thorpe and Geoff O’nion were next up ahead of Peter Froude and series returnee Trevor Messett’s Chevron B9, the third European Klaus Bergs rounded off the F3s ahead of Nigel Miller and Barry Pusey. Sadly we lost Steve Wilkinson with clutch problems and Chris Alford who was having an outing in the David Pullen Brabham BT15. Jim Chapman had head problems which were only cured in time for Sunday's Classic F3 race.
Anthony Ross led for the first lap ahead of Fischer before order was restored and Ian Gray took over at the front; the rolling start seemed to have caught out a few people out as Methley was down in sixth, but by lap three he was up to third, taking second on lap four and hounding Gray unmercifully (even getting his nose in front briefly) eventually coming home just 2.641 seconds behind. Fischer dropped back into Bancroft’s clutches and the pair proceeded to swap places until the last lap when Bancroft came through on his own, Fischer coasting across the line behind Tizzard and Derossi having run short on fuel; Derossi losing third place to Tizzard for the very same reason. Tim Kary had another good run to come home sixth ahead of Messer in the Vesey; Messer spent the race battling with Brown in his Brabham BT23C Twin Cam and described himself as being like his tyres ‘old and tired’ . Chris Holland had a lonely race coming home eighth, Peter Froude, Trevor Messett and Klaus Bergs took the next three places while Bosson came home twelfth after pitting, ahead of Miller and Pusey. Geoff O’Nion and Andrew Thorpe both retired on the eighth lap, Geoff after an incident, Andrew with unspecified engine problems.
Methley’s pursuit of Ian Gray had been spectacular and earned him fastest lap of the race overall as well as fastest F3; it had been anticipated that Silverstone would be about power, but perhaps the new layout has evened things out.
