Jon Milicevic made it three wins from three rounds of the Historic Formula 3 Championship but had to work hard in both races as a tremendous grid of cars arrived at Cadwell Park for the Justin Haler Memorial Trophy (15/16 June).
A double-header during the annual HSCC Wolds Trophy meeting at the fabulous Lincolnshire track drew a fine field of 22 cars, despite several late withdrawals for various reasons. Contenders in the European Trophy were welcome additions to the field, including three members of the Timms family from Gloucestershire.
Eight weeks on from his victory in the season-opener at Donington Park, Milicevic used his excellent knowledge of the three-dimensional track to head the qualifying times. Unfortunately, qualifying had to be halted temporarily after Mike Walker’s immaculate Brabham BT21 slid off at the Mountain. Mike, ahead of what would have been his first 1-litre F3 race for 51 years, was unharmed but frustrated over the incident.
Jeremy Timms ran strongly in his ex-Reine Wisell Chevron B15 to be second fastest ahead of Paul Waine, who has the De Sanctis running well, Mike Scott, Jason Timms and Francois Derossi. Cadwell fan Christoph Widmer was seventh fastest before the March 703s of Neil Armstrong and Simon Armer.
For qualifying the two Marches headed the Historic F3 pack onto the track to honour the recent death of March founder Robin Herd and 50 years since the 1969 Cadwell Park debut for the first March, the 693 raced by Ronnie Peterson.
Milicevic always led the first race, but this was never an easy task for the reigning champion as cousins Jason and Jeremy Timms offered a strong challenge in Brabham BT21 and Chevron B15 respectively. Along with Jason’s dad Jim, they were part of a welcome contingent from the European Trophy and they had excellent pace as they chased Milicevic.
“I switched the fuel pump off accidentally mid-race, but he was pushing me along,” said Milicevic of Jeremy T’s pursuit in the opening race. Jeremy was pleased to have run close to Milicevic on their first proper on-track encounter. “I pushed him for the first part of the race but then the gap went out a bit in traffic. Then I missed a gear and that was it,” said Jeremy.
Derossi did well to battle up to third for the final podium place in the face of a dogged pursuit from Jason Timms. “I chased him the whole race,” said Jason. Waine was a secure if slightly lonely fifth before Mike Scott saw off Simon Armer by three-tenths of a second after a race-long contest that also included Armstrong at one point.
On Sunday, Jason Timms took up the fight in second place and was a similar distance behind Milicevic at the finish. It was a double-win that puts Milicevic in the driving seat heading to rounds four and five at Anglesey in mid-July.
Derossi completed an excellent weekend by chasing Jason T home to complete a podium double as Jeremy Timms dropped back to fourth. Widmer had a strong race to work up to fifth place from Waine as Armer got the better of Scott for seventh and Barry Sewell (Lotus 41) did well to work into the top 10 after an unnerving suspension breakage in testing on Friday.
