27th-28th June 2015 - Cadwell Park

James King Takes the Justin Haler Trophy

On a weekend that celebrated the heritage of Formula 3, the Historic Formula 3 Championship provided two excellent races at the challenging Cadwell Park circuit in Lincolnshire during the HSCC’s annual Wolds Trophy (Saturday/Sunday 27/28 June).

Once again, the Historic F3 races at Cadwell celebrated racing journalist Justin Haler and the race winners were James Denty and James King. Denty won in the ex-Mo Nunn Lotus 41 on the car’s racing return after more than 20 years in storage and King won on his return to the track 38 years after winning a round of the British Formula 3 Championship.

An excellent 19-car field arrived in Lincolnshire where the Lotus 41, now owned by Klaus Bergs, grabbed a great deal of attention. To his own great surprise, on his first race at Cadwell since 1994, Denty took pole by just a tenth of a second from Dean Forward (Tecno) and Simon Armer (March 703). King (Chevron B17), Jim Blockley (Brabham BT21B) and Paul Waine (De Sanctis) were closely matched in the next three places.

The opening race on Saturday featured a great lead battle between Denty and Forward which only ended when Forward was slowed by a rear puncture and forced to retire to the pits. “Dean put up a good fight,” said Denty. “We only finished the car yesterday and qualifying was a bit of a shock to the system! But the car has been perfect and the engine was fantastic.”

In their wake, Armer just got the better of King as the American racer made his first visit to Cadwell Park since 1977. For Armer, it was a reversal of the Goodwood result from earlier this season, while King’s last visit to Cadwell had resulted in a win in the ’77 British F3 Championship in a works March. “It’s a lovely track, but 1977 was a long time ago,” said King.

A little way back, Michael Scott (Brabham BT28) worked his way through some excellent battles to take fourth from Waine and Jon Waggitt (Brabham BT18).

On Sunday, Denty and Forward soon rejoined their duel from the opening race, but King’s Chevron joined their early break. Forward led around the outside at Coppice on lap two before Denty retook him on the Park Straight, having got a tow out of Charlies. “Dean tried to outbrake me again at Park he locked up before we touched wheels,” said Denty after Forward spun.

King dived ahead in the confusion and was left in the clear to take victory. Meanwhile, Denty spun as he crested the Mountain on the same lap and retired, which allowed Armer to take second after he fought ahead of Blockley at Barn. The Brabhams of Leif Bosson, Waggitt and Scott rounded out the first six.
