The 2010 Peter Hanson Seasonal Review
The 2010 Peter Hanson Trophy was again held over three meetings, at Brands Hatch in June, Oulton Park in August and at a very wet Spa in September. The season belonged to David Methley with him taking 4 wins out of 5 races; David joined the Historic Formula 3’s at the HSCC May Silverstone GP race meeting with his newly acquired Merlyn Mk14Aand the orange car was instantly setting the pace. Peter Hanson wins at Brands, Oulton and at Spa followed; David did not have things all his own way with both Nigel Bancroft and Roland Fischer providing strong challenges at Oulton Park and at Spa Roland took a dominant win in the first of the two races.
Roland Fischer had problems with his Tecno at the Eifelrennen race in June and these recurred at the Brands Hatch SuperPrix round forcing him to miss the start. All had been repaired by Oulton Park, Roland taking pole position for Heat one and two third places when the dust settled; a win and a second at Roland’s beloved Spa rounded of another competitive season.
Paul McMorran had mechanical problems which slowed him at Brands and was then obliged to miss the two Oulton Park rounds before turning in two strong performances at the very wet Spa meeting. Steve Wilkinson with his trusty Brabham did all the rounds and his consistency paid off, just missing out on a top three finish. Chris Holland was unable to take part in the Gold Cup round due to a family bereavement, but was always a top front runner and with good finishes at Brands and Oulton brought him fifth spot.
Completing the top six was series newcomer Jim Chapman with his charismatic Gold Leaf Lotus 59, initially Jim struggled to sort the car but finished the season with a very strong drive in the wet conditions at Spa. Jim also let Bev Bond, the car’s original driver, race the car at the Gold Cup meeting where in spite of a lack of recent experience Bev brought the car home in an excellent seventh.
After his magnificent run at Monaco, Francois Derossi’s season went from bad to worse, mechanical problems at the Nurburgring carried over to Brands Hatch; Oulton Park was missed and then at Spa an off in practice and a misfire conspired against him.
This season has seen the Historic F3s continue to grow in strength with 29 drivers having taken part in the Peter Hanson Trophy. The single header round at Brands Hatch possibly limited the number of European visitors, whilst the mechanical mayhem of the Nurburgring certainly had a knock on effect.
2011 promises to be an even better year and we now await full details of the calendar to be published.
