Race wins for de la Roche, Timms becomes champion.
Silverstone Finals was blessed with mainly dry weather and 17 Screamers rolled out for qualifying, notable in their midst was series returnee, Andrew Thorpe, in his beautifully restored Lotus 31.
Oli Musgrave cemented his reputation as this year’s rookie coming-man by putting his Musgrave Racing, ex Simon Haughton Chevron B15, run by Neil Cox, on pole. But by a scant 0.02 seconds! 2025 Champion Peter de la Roche in his usual family tended ex Ken Sedgley Alexis Mk17 was second and hard charging Ross Drybrough third in his Merlyn Mk 14A. Perennially quick Richard Trott (Brabham BT28), championship leader Jason Timms (Brabham BT21) and Mark Carter (Titan Mk3) were all bracketed within the same second as the pole time, promising a barn storming couple of races.
Race 1 erupted into life and the leading gaggle set about a typical F3 screamer duel round Silverstone’s slipstream inducing straights. Oli Musgrave managed to hold on to the lead but Richard Trott used his over 50 years of racing experience to capitalise on the opening lap coming round in second place. De La Roche, Drybrough and Timms were in pursuit and made for a busy bit of lap charting as the race progressed. Timms later admitted to having the championship in mind by staying in touch but not wanting to prejudice his points position by tagging someone. The latter was unlikely to happen as the leading protagonists swopped places with aplomb amid several changes of lead.
In the end Peter de la Roche eked out a relatively comfortable lead whilst pole sitter Musgrave just pipped Drybrough by fractions with Timms, Carter, Trott (having slipped back), welcome returnee Armer (March 703), Wallen (ex Carlos Pace Lotus 59), Durban and Sewell completing the top ten. The latter two were resplendent in their almost identical and immaculate, red Lotus 41s, fighter pilot Durban in his ex Mo Nunn car ahead of Barry Sewell, who at over 80, demonstrates that age is no a barrier to racing competitively.
After an overnight breather, battle resumed in Race 2 on Sunday. Pole this time belonged to Peter de la Roche ahead of Drybrough, Musgrave, Timms, Trott and Carter.
If anything this was even more of a Silverstone slipstreaming special with three different leaders in the first three laps alone. Carter sadly failed, or rather his car did, after a couple of laps, a detached plug lead being the main culprit. By lap 10 only a second covered the first four.
Going into the last lap, the first five cars were covered by 0.8 seconds and Musgrave having led for several laps possibly thought his first win was within in his grasp. With the crowd on its feet, de la Roche deservedly pinched the win by 0.04 seconds - a hairsbreadth. Timms cemented his 2026 Championship by claiming a podium in third with Drybrough only 0.1 seconds behind.
Trott was fifth ahead of Leif Bosson (Brabham BT28). This was an extremely popular result for the Swedish former champion and ardent supporter of the series. Leif was a scant 0.03 seconds ahead of Paul Durban, who rounded off his first season of racing in style, demonstrating that he’s getting the hang of both driving and racing these cars - encouragement for others joining this ever growing series.
Next up are the Awards Luncheon at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon on November 21st.
